Abstract

This paper examines Canada Goose’s functional luxury positioning through a qualitative case analysis based on academic literature, company disclosures, and selected industry evidence. Functional luxury is used as an operational description of a positioning that combines functional value, symbolic value and premium pricing, rather than as an established, universally defined academic category. Brand positioning and brand equity perspectives guide the analysis of differentiation and premium justification, while Porter’s Five Forces framework is used separately to assess the external competitive environment. The analysis suggests that cold-weather heritage and manufacturing capabilities provide resources for differentiation, but that their commercial value depends on customers’ evaluation of performance, service and price. Slower growth in fiscal 2025, followed by a revenue recovery alongside profitability pressure in the third quarter of fiscal 2026, indicates a need to examine the quality of growth rather than assume a permanent market ceiling. The paper proposes four corresponding priorities: demonstrate functional value, improve service consistency, develop products for additional seasons selectively, and align pricing and channel investment with customer value. The conclusions are interpretive and do not establish causal effects or population-wide changes in consumer attitudes.
